According to the old folks, the name may have been derived from “bacong,” a luxuriantly growing plant in that area. The rhizome of this plant resembles a giant onion, had long wide leaves and white flowers. People in the locality used the flowers and leaves of the said plant as cure for boils.
According to the old folks, Barangay Bacong was once a sitio of Barrio Ma-ao. It became a barangay after the World War II.
