The place is named after a kind of grass with thorny vines, “sampinit” that thrived in the swamps around the Barangay.

Prior to the famous revolution led by General Juan Anacleto Araneta on November 5, 1898, Sampinit was part of the pueblo known as Bago. The first cluster of families lived in what was known as Sitio Pinanuy-an.
