It is formerly known as Barangay Ma-ao Central or the sugar barangay because of the sugar central that first operated in 1920 with Don Aguedo Gonzaga acting as first manager.

The name was later changed to Don Jorge Araneta in honor of one of the illustrious sons of Bago City. He was acknowledged mas the founder of the Ma-ao Sugar Milling Company.

He spearheaded the economic boom of the sugar industry in this milling district through his professional management of the Ma-ao Sugar Central.
